Throughout last week, Title IX hosted daily events for Consent Week, Title IX’s annual week of educating students about consent and their rights as SUNY Plattsburgh students.
Title IX’s hour long Compliance Session, hosted by Violence Prevention Education and Outreach Coordinator Zyaijah Nadler, kicked off Consent Week last Monday and Tuesday to allow all student leaders to attend the mandatory session. This information session, accessible remotely through Zoom, was for specific students here on campus; only club and organizations leaders were to attend. Students were directed to fill out a short registration form to enter the meeting- stating their names, leadership position and what club or fraternal organization they led.
The purpose of the Compliance Session was to educate students on their rights and resources at SUNY Plattsburgh, but also to make sure leaders of clubs and organizations on campus know about consent, understand their responsibility to report, and learn how to properly make a report.
“Students leaders are considered Responsible Employees here at SUNY Plattsburgh, which means they are required to report any knowledge of interpersonal violence, sexual violence, sex discrimination and/or gender discrimation,” Nadler said.
Also accessible remotely through Zoom, this trivia event was open to all students but only one person logged on for the event.
Friday, ended with the Title IX & Community Valentine’s Day Trivia. Instead of being hosted by Title IX, the event was hosted by Housing & Community Living, therefore only on-campus students could attend by contacting their CA for the zoom link.
“As Valentine’s Day comes around everyone is talking and/or feeling the love,” Nadler said. “Consent week is a time that we encourage everyone to look at love in a new way. A way where consent is understood, communicated and boundaries are respected.”
Although only certain people were able to attend this event, Title IX will be hosting a trivia event in March for all SUNY Plattsburgh students.
The Title IX Student Campus Climate Survey for Sexual Violence Prevention will remain open from Feb. 15 to March 22. Students who take the 15-minute survey will have a chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card.
