I can actually go out to the bars now that I’m 21. For five months now, I have had the experience of being able to legally drink. Let me tell you, it can either be the best or worst time of your life.
I was counting down the days and excited for my 21st birthday. My license finally came in the mail. I said to myself that when I got back to school I was going to experience everything downtown.
When I arrived for the new semester, I was so overwhelmed because last semester I told my friends that I’m going to go out on Thursday and on weekends. Little did I know that the idea of going downtown is completely different actually going.
Let’s just say the experience at the bars isn’t what people say it is. While going out the first weekend of school, I discovered a lot of interesting things about the downtown area. One is that you have to know the exact time everyone goes out. I made that mistake the first night I went to the bars. I decided to go downtown around 9 p.m.
You also need to know the right bars to go to. For example, my favorite spot downtown is Off the Hookah and Monopole. Off the Hookah is a type of 21+ night club while Monopole is just a bar where you can go watch sporting events or just relax and take a load off.
Not only can I go to the bars in Plattsburgh, I now have the opportunity to go out back home in New York City and experience the nightlife there. The city obviously has a different scen than Plattsburgh. The city has about 1700 bars you can choose from.
Being 21 can be fun if you know the right way to make the experience worthwhile. Instead of watching the game in your room, you can go downtown to the bar and watch the game on a big screen with a little drink in your hand.
A 21-year-old knows that it isn’t all fun and games. There are pros and cons to being able to drink.
According to valleymagazine.com, some pros include not having to get all dressed up for a house party and having a girls’ night out on the town.
However, there are also cons, including the fact that bars are expensive and increase the chance of having a drink spilled on you.
Being 21 can be fun, but you need to know how much fun is too much. Just a warning to all students who are under 21: Enjoy going to house parties, but at the same time, get excited about legally going to the bars.
Know how to handle yourself whenever you go out. You will learn that downtown is not just another house party.
