Cardinals Go on a Bear Hunt

On Friday, Feb. 11, The Plattsburgh State men’s ice hockey team took down SUNY Potsdam at SUNYAC inside the Maxcy Ice Arena. This win puts the Cardinals in a position where they could possibly participate in the SUNYAC tournament and make it in the final conference standings.

First-period, junior Ryan Hogg started off the game with his first goal of the season, and at 6:16 sophomore forward man Paul Bryer also got an assist on a flat-out one-time shot past the goalie. Potsdam then started to play catch up, 12:06 and that’s when forward Robert Clerc made a pass to forward Michael McArthur, who scored the puck into an open net. Ludwig was also given an assist in that play.

The Cardinals immediately had a 3-1 advantage at 6:22 of the second period. Sophomore forward Carson Gallagher scored, creating a power play. Senior defense Matt Araujo made it to the left point and Araujo moved the puck taking it out of the ditch presented before Gallagher left it in.

At 3:24 of the third round, Young really started scoring. He basically saw a wide-open shot and used it to his advantage, he skated to the end and managed to score on the other side, beating the goalie to it. 

Adam Tretowicz is another player making strategic playing moves, scoring at 12:08 of the third round. Tretowicz and Young went back and forth, creating a 2-on-1 rush into the other team’s score zone. Tretowicz passed the puck to Young on the left side and got ready to push it through the goal. Young passes it back to Tretowicz. Tretowicz made the goal.

Potsdam’s Ludwig finally started stepping up for Potsdam in a time of need and broke up the scoring spree at 16:12 of the third round. Garrett McArthur and Josh Bifolchi got some assists on the score.

 The Cardinals won with a score of 5-2. The first round of the SUNYAC Tournament will take place Feb 26. Then following up, a semi final round will take place March 2. The championship game is scheduled for March 5, 2022.
