Galentines deserve love too

By Sophie Albertie

It’s Valentine’s day in 2010, or whatever year you were in elementary school. The walls of the classroom are littered with pink and purple paper hearts and fairy lights. Everyone is six years old and does not yet recognize the commercial gain of this holiday. Your teacher says the time has come for the pupils to hand out the candy and cards your mom went to the store earlier to buy in bulk for the class, so no kid is left out.

This is one of the more nostalgic memories from my childhood, the spirit of giving gifts out of affection and appreciation, rather than just romance.

Valentine’s day needs to look like this every year, in some form or other. Gal-entines and pal-entines should not be something that single people do as a second alternative option. It’s ok to not have a partner to put on a pedestal. Come on honey, you can have your candy hearts and eat them too.

February 14th is the day of love, call your mom. Go on a cute date and have a craft night with your friends. We as a species have the potential to truly make this the greatest holiday ever and completely rewrite the narrative that anyone has to be alone on their couch eating chocolate and watching rom-coms.

Unless you want to, that actually still sounds pretty nice.
