The women’s ice hockey season is right around the corner. Prior to the exhibition match at home against the University of New England on Saturday, Oct. 21, the Plattsburgh State Cardinals released its final roster. The NEWHL champions will look to take the first SUNYAC title as the NEWHL has been renamed to the SUNYAC this year.
Sixteen forwards are listed on the 2023-2024 roster: first-year Lilli Bills, first-year Sydnee Francis, graduate student Julia Masotta, sophomore Emma McLean, junior Riley Calhoun, graduate student Tatem Cheney, sophomore Molly Riggi, senior Mae Olshansky, graduate student Ivy Boric, first-year Ava Mataliano, junior Bridget Orr, first-year Emily Kasprzak, first-year Dani Longuemare, senior Ciara Wall, first-year Zsofia Pazmandi and sophomore Grace Yarkosky.
Seven defensemen make this year’s roster: first-year Adriana Urban, sophomore Aizah Thompson, graduate student Kendall Wasik, junior Mattie Norton, first-year Maeghan Forsyth, sophomore Taya Balfour and sophomore Su-An Cho.
Two goalkeepers complete the roster, first-year Chloe Lewis and graduate student Lilla Nease.
Nine players from last year’s championship team are not on the roster: Sara Krauseneck and Sierra Benjamin now play for Skellefteå AIK in Skellefteå Sweden; Nicole Unsworth, Holly Schmelzer and Ashley Davis spent their eligibility; Rivers Morris transferred to Endicott; Jordan Kowalski transferred to Utica; Chloe Beaubien transferred to Elmira; and Lily Stumm is not listed.
Head Coach Kevin Houle returns for his 21st season, joined by fifth-year Assistant Coach Julia Duquette and Goalie Coach Kassi Abbott.Â
Wasik will be the team’s captain and Masotta, Norton, and Boric are the alternative captains.
The Cardinals are sporting new jerseys this year, matching with the men’s. The team will be wearing black on the road, and keep white for home.
