Women use dominating win to sweep weekend

The Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team completed the weekend sweep over Chatham with an 11-1 win at home Sunday afternoon.

Wasting no time, the Cards established their offense abilities early in the first period with a goal from junior forward Giovanna Sense. PSUC would not stop their and saw goals from Bridget Balisy and Katelyn Turk in the first as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

Plattsburgh head coach Kevin Houle said he was pleased with his team’s overall performance and recognized the importance of getting wins in conference play.

“These were two important games and 4 points that you have to have,” Houle said. “You can’t afford a slip up on these types of games.”

With today’s win the Cards now are 4-0 throughout their conference games and sit in first place in the ECAC West conference.

Cougar’s goaltender Sydney Isbell was kept busy in the second period as PSUC tallied up six goals after firing off 22 shots. Freshman Kayla Meneghin continued her hot-streak and completed a hat-trick, earning First Star honors in the game.

“She’s obviously had a great start to the season and there are bigger games to come, but she’s def played very well and has been very consistent and that’s something that’s hard to do as a freshman,” Houle said.

The Cardinals would find the back of the net two more times in the third. Chatham scored its lone-goal in the third as well. Camille Leonard got the start in net for PSUC and finished the day with 22 saves.

“Although we got off to a big lead today I thought she played a good game,” Houle said. “Camille made some nice saves and looked comfortable in there so that’s a good sign as well.”
