University Police welcomes four new recruits

The Plattsburgh State University Police Department welcomed four new recruits to its ranks in October.

Jared Booth of Beekmantown; Joshua Coons of Ellenburg Depot; Ashley Feldt of Ogdensburg; and David “DJ” Lyons of Livingston were sworn in as officers during the October ceremony, according to a PSUC press release.

While Coons, Feldt and Booth all recently began their professional training at the Plattsburgh Police Department’s Zone 9 Police Training Academy, Lyons finished his training in 2013 from the Zone 14 Law Enforcement Academy in Hudson.

Professional training is provided according to the New York Division of Criminal Justice Services mandates and is comprised of more than 639 hours of training for each recruit. Many of the Plattsburgh academy instructors are officers from the Plattsburgh Police Department.

The academy, which is known as being both physically and mentally rigorous, provides new recruits professional and personal experience.

After graduating from the academy, recruits are required to complete a minimum of 400 hours over a 10-week period of supervised field training, also in compliance with the New York Division of Criminal Justice Services.

Senior University Police members, who are all DCJS certified, will oversee each recruit’s training.
