SA increase emergency funds to assist students

The Plattsburgh State Student Association raised the emergency funds allocated to students needing a financial boost, approved African Initiative’s request for event funding and approved provisional status for the Love Your Melon Club.

The SA approved the motion to amend Special Programs allocations from $10,000 to $15,000. These funds will go toward assisting students with tuition bills that may be putting restrictions on their account.

The extra money was able to be allocated due to the limited amount of time left in the semester for the Finance Board to offer it to clubs and a surplus of $21,000.

“We realized with one meeting left, we might as well raise that price up and get $15,000 out of the money that senate has because no one would be coming to use it,” SA president Essence Hightower said. “If the money wasn’t used this semester, it would go into reserves.”

Students can receive $50 to $1,000 depending on their needs. Vice President of Student Affairs Bryan Hartman or Kehoe sixth-floor secretary Terry Lacey can be seen as the preliminary step in receiving emergency funds.

The African Initiative Club was approved for its request of $745 for an event of visual compilations and performances.

The club will host a Garden of Eden themed artist collaboration that will feature a Bollywood performance, spoken word and the PSUC Bluegrass Club Monday, April 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Warren Ballrooms.

“It’s an event where it feels natural for artists to let their art flow,” said senior member Rana Hijazi.

African Initiative member Danielle Young  said this event will be “a celebration of culture through art.”

Henna, as well as prizes, will be offered and Chartwells will be catering. The ticket sales of $4 for SA students and $6 for non-SA students will be donated to an African-owned nonprofit organization in Uganda.

The Love Your Melon Club received provisional club status and will work to raise money and plan events in support of children diagnosed with pediatric cancer.

Goals for the club include bringing awareness to the campus community through activities such as working with the Ronald McDonald house and hosting bone marrow drives.

The SA holds its meeting every Wednesday at 9:15 p.m. in the Cardinal Lounge of the Angell College Center.
