Rotaract promotes personal, physical social development

The Rotaract Club provide opportunities for young men and women to come together to exchange ideas with leaders in the community, develop professional skills and have fun through service.

The Rotaract Club on campus allows students to enhance their knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, take action on physical and social needs in their communities and promote better relationships between members of society through a framework of friendship.

“The reasons for joining Rotaract club are endless,” Rebecca Otero, president of Rotaract club said. “It emphasizes respect for the rights of others and creates excellent networking opportunities.”

Rotaract currently has 15 active members who attend daily meetings. There are also a few other members that come and volunteer for events when they please. Rotaract members have helped with events such as the YMCA Halloween party, Quilters Guild, Bike-A-Thon for Polio, Plattsburgh Comic Con and held a campus-wide clothing drive for The Salvation Army.

Its outreach efforts consist of sending emails to students on campus, posting on their social media accounts, attending other student meetings and occasionally posting on the Helper Helper app, which students use to sign up for community service opportunities. Rotaract has also hosted meetings for resume building and setting up a Linkedin account.

In one word, Otero described Rotaract as results. Based off of a quotation from the Rotary Founder, Paul Harris said “Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.”

Rotary goes by their six pillars, which include: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education and growing local economies.

“I enjoy giving back to the community in any way that I can,” Otero said.

The Rotaract Club meets on Mondays at 8 p.m. in meeting room three inside the Angell College Center.
