PSU drops two games as new semester begins

After a short break, the Plattsburgh State men’s ice hockey team came back and took two losses against SUNY Oswego and SUNY Cortland this past weekend.

“The Stuff Stafford crowd was probably our biggest of the year.” freshman defenseman Christian Dahl said.

The Stuff Stafford crowd was seen throughout the stands on Friday, January 31 in the game against Oswego.

“[I’d] like to see more students come to all the games.” Head Coach Stephen Moffat said.  “It really makes a good atmosphere and the guys like to play in front of their friends.”

The first period of the game against Oswego led to both teams scoring one point each in the first period. Oswego player Alex DiCarlo scored the first goal at 17:37. PSU freshman forward Brendan Young scored shortly after at 18:10.

Dahl, Joe Kile and Christian Thomas are the three freshmen that assisted Young with his fourth goal of the season.

During the second period, Josh Zeizek and DiCarlo then scored two goals leaving Oswego in the lead 3-1 before the second half of the game.

The Cardinals second point was saved by senior forward and alternate captain Ryan Kuhn. The point came from freshman forward Hunter Alden’s shot, which Kuhn saved at 17:48 in the third period. This then left the game at 3-2

Michael Gillespie, from Oswego, made the final score 4-2 by getting an empty-net goal. Gillespie originally passed the puck to a Laker, and a Cardinal dove redirecting the puck into the goal.

After the loss, PSU played against the Cortland Dragons on Saturday and lost 5-4.

In the first period of the game, Cortland scored two points, leaving the score 2-0. However, the Cards made a comeback in the second period.

With shots made by Young, and sophomore forward Cullen Kane, Plattsburgh was one point down, leaving the score 3-2.

The third period was when Cortland took the lead making the score 4-2, but Kane and senior defenseman Andrew Pizzo each scored.
