Plattsburgh marches for change

The town of Plattsburgh and Plattsburgh State rallied together during the We Walk Together and March for Our Lives events that took place last Thursday and Saturday, respectively, to remind onlookers what can happen when the local and campus communities unite.

Hundreds of community members and students of all ages, genders and races came together in solidarity to take a stand against discrimination present in Plattsburgh in the We Walk Together event by simply walking together as a (word) unit.

The walk was organized by several local forces including Plattsburgh Cares, PSUC Vice President of Student Affairs Bryan Hartman and a few local leaders of faith to have Plattsburgh habitants demonstrate acceptance and appreciation for diverse PSUC students.

While Thursday’s walk showed the community’s capability to address its own issues, Saturday’s march, part of the larger nationwide March for Our Lives movement, showed that Plattsburgh can come together to be a part of something bigger than itself.

The movement stemmed from the recent school shooting and response from students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Tens of thousands of people around the nation marched for increased gun control, and Plattsburgh residents, high school students and college students all were a part of that.

Over 200 people very vocally made their points heard and will be able to always look back at themselves as a part of this historical movement.

We at Cardinal Points hope that Plattsburgh will never lose this activist spirit and will continue to help inspire change moving forward.
