New leaders emerge for Cardinals tennis

The Plattsburgh State’s women’s tennis team is looking to bounce back from a disappointing end to their 2014 campaign.

Last fall, the Cardinals ended their season on back to back losses in the SUNYAC Tournament to Geneseo and Oswego. This brought the Cards season tally to three wins and eight losses. This is obviously not the ideal level of success teams strive for, but they hope that the 2015 season will take this program in a more positive direction.

The tennis team came to campus a few weeks ago for preseason, and have been putting in hard work since their arrival.

Head coach Annmarie Curle, who is beginning her second full season at the helm for PSUC, cites improvement as one of her primary goals for this year’s team.

“Our main goal is always, whether it be preseason or during the season, continuous improvement,” Curle said.

PSUC’s personnel this season also looks quite promising. The team’s unique blend of young talent and veteran leadership very well may produce a tough combo for opponents to overcome. The team will be led by six juniors and a senior, with a pair of sophomores and three first year freshmen following their lead.

The Card’s No. 1 hitter this season is junior Kaitlyn Healy.

Healy, who competed in both singles and doubles matches last season, is now stepping into a larger role for her team. With this bigger role approaching, Healy started her training on her own time during summer vacation.

“I’ve been training since the middle of the summer,” Healy said.

She also spent some of her summer working at a tennis camp with children.

Junior Jackie Ciriello hopes to see improvement in her signles play this season. Ciriello believes improving her strength will improve her singles record.

“I did more weight training in the offseason to gain more strength,” Ciriello said.

If PSUC’s first match against Lyndon State College is any indicator of how their season is going to go, they are looking forward to a very successful campaign.

The Cards defeated Lyndon 9-0, sweeping in both singles and doubles matches.
