Letter to the editor: Misused word chance to learn about culture

I was quite surprised to see the headline on page 7 of the most recent Cardinal Points that read: “Music lovers gypped by big business”. It may not be as commonly known as other ethnic slurs, but the term “gypped” makes reference to an ethnic group in Eastern Europe, the Romani or Roma, who were more commonly referred to as “gypsies”. The unfounded belief that this entire beautiful traditional culture was comprised of people who were dishonest led to terms about being “gypped”. Thanks for your commitment to journalism, and allowing me to share my thoughts.
