Joe Teti talks survival skills

Not many people are comfortable with or enjoy “team building days.” Not because they don’t like their peers, but because some of them don’t know how to communicate or take charge when placed in a team setting.

On April 18, Joseph Teti will come to Plattsburgh to talk about team building and communication. Teti is a U.S. Special Forces veteran and co-star of Discovery Channel’s “Dual Survival.”

Pine Harbour, an assisted living home in Plattsburgh, found that Teti does speaking engagements and thought it would be great if he came to Plattsburgh to speak.

“It’s been stressful, but a fun challenge,” said Maria Latinville, marketing director of Pine Harbour.

With hosting the event, Latinville and her co-workers did a number of things for the event to come together, including booking the Strand Theatre, where the event will take place.

“There will be two parts to the event. Joe will be presenting in the first part,” Latinville said. “He will be talking about leadership, communication, situational awareness and more.”

Latinville said Teti learned these skills in the military and will show the audience how to apply these skills in their everyday lives.

The second part will be more of an interaction between Teti and the audience.

Teti will be using a memory tactic he learned in the military called “Kim’s game.”

Kim’s (Keep In Memory System) game develops a person’s capacity to observe and remember details.

Teti will use the game to help the audience strengthen their memories and help them remember certain details from a situation.

“We are really excited for this event,” Latinville said. “Joe’s full of energy and a really down-to-earth guy.”

One of the key factors of putting this event together was Pine Harbour getting sponsors for the event, including the YMCA and Pok-O-MacCready Camps & Outdoor Education Center.

“We support the work that Pine Harbour does. It’s a great community event for everyone,” said Kevin Killeen, executive director and CEO of the Plattsburgh YMCA.

At the YMCA, they have before- and after-school programs, along with camps in the summer. They provide exercises where the children try and build themselves up while communicating better with their peers.

“Joseph Teti shares our goals,” said Brian DeGroat, executive director of the summer program and the outdoor education center of the MacCready camps. “The event is getting children and adults to come together, and that’s what we want.”

One way DeGroat exercises these goals is through a low ropes course, where the children need to work together.

“It’s a great challenge to come together and work,” he said.

The event will be held on April 18 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Strand Theatre.

Tickets for the event are available now through Pine Harbour’s website: www.pineharbour.org
