Editorial: Use voice to fight injustices

As we settle into the new semester, we have some new changes afoot. Let’s just talk about the elephant in the room: there are two most recent occurrences since President Donald Trump has been sworn into presidency.

Shortly after Trump was inaugurated, the Women’s March became one of the first acts of protest against his presidency for making multiple misogynistic comments toward women. Additionally, the protests continued following Trump’s order to ban travel from seven Muslim-majority countries for 90 days and suspend refugee admission for 120 days.

In Opinions and FUSE Editor Laura Schmidt’s article “Stand up, dispute against abuse of power,” and Editor in Chief Kavita Singh’s article “Feminist awakening opens eyes,” there is a clear sense of standing up for your rights regardless of the political power a person may hold over you. Trump has been known to target marginalized groups including women, immigrants, Muslims and the LGBTQ community using hateful words. But these words — they’re meant to silence us.

In a time where words and actions are being used to create fear, it is important that we stand up for what we believe in. You may feel like one person whose voice doesn’t matter. But allowing someone to belittle you to feel that way is not the answer. You have a voice. Let it be heard. Eventually, one voice will become two, and then three, and then suddenly there will be a ban of people rallying against inequality, which was demonstrated with both the immigration and women protests.
