Editorial: Dialogue in relationships

What makes a good relationship? The Cardinal Points Editorial Board thought of things like trust, mutual love and honesty. Communication also plays a huge role, according to a recent study published by the Huffington Post. This study was highlighted in Fuse Editor Kavita Singh’s article, “Communication is easy, not cheesy.”

Communication ties into all of the other things mentioned above. You can’t have trust, mutual love or honesty without communication. Talking open and candidly with your partner provides expectations and lets you learn more about each other.

Unfortunately, in today’s society, people can be whoever they want, deceiving others they interact with, similar to “catfishing.” This form of dishonest communication, although practiced behind a computer screen can cause real-life consequences. Imagine a world with no more “he said, she said” arguments, or a place where decoding text messages and status updates did not exist.

Communicating honestly and openly may lead you to hear things you wish not to, but at least you’ll have a clear answer to learn from.

“Another factor the Huffington Post article suggested was the compatibility of the two people together. The article stated solid relationships have less to do with constantly having to work on the relationship and more to do with the couple being on the same “wavelength” in terms of communicating,” Singh wrote in her article. “In other words, the more positive the relationship is, the better the communication will be.”

Communication doesn’t just guide romantic relationships. Being open and honest with family members, peers, co-workers or platonic friends can enhance your life in all areas. There will be no misinterpretations or unanswered questions.

If you positively interact with other people in your life, romantic relationship or not, you will be responsible for spreading open, healthy communication — something we could all use a little more of today.
