Courses offer helpful lessons

When things go wrong, people need to be prepared to take action. Plattsburgh State offers courses to prepare people for worst-case scenarios.

Some of the programs here at PSUC are non-credit CPR/First Aid/AED instructed courses, which train students to get certified.

One of the instructors, Karen Waterbury, who is in charge of recreation and club sports on campus and has been teaching the course for 10 years and said it has three components in CPR, First Aid and AED.

Another instructor is Lisa Vicencio, the assistant athletic trainer here at PSUC. She has been teaching the course on CPR for seven years.

“In terms of CPR, the course is very important; you never know when you may have to implement a skill,” Vicencfio said. “The class that I teach is CPR/ First Aid. It deals with things outside of cardiovascular issues, such as if someone drinks too much, strokes or has a seizure.”

The course teaches the students what to do in case of an emergency, such as if a person is poisoned or in shock.
Baileey Byrnes is a nursing student who took the course with Waterbury. She said the course gives you important skills that help save lives.

In order to sign up for the course, you must be a PSUC student, faculty or staff member. The course fee is $40, paid at a scheduled time to Memorial 303.

There are also many different types of CPR courses the students could enroll in either in the fall or the spring semesters.

Along with the CPR course for first- timers, there is a course every two years American Red Cross advises students to renew their certification, especially for lifeguards. Students who are renewing have to follow set procedures.

The first thing a student has to do is show his/her American Red Cross card that has been issued for two years. The students have to pay a fee of $30 and they need to check the CPR lab schedule and procedures in Memorial 304.

The students can use as many lab periods to practice and pass a practical testing of appropriate CPR skills.
