Cards turn things around against Buffalo State

After three consecutive losses the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team returned in top-form as they defeated Buffalo State 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

To keep their SUNYAC hopes alive, PSUC (7-6-1, 3-3-1 SUNYAC) was put in a must-win situation on Saturday against Buffalo State (6-7-2, 3-4-0 SUNYAC). The Cards’ wasted no time and were able to put one on the board two minutes into the game. Freshman Madeline Saccocio earned her second goal of the season off of a Jill Tardelli cross to put PSUC ahead 1-0.

Head Coach Tania Armellino was pleased with the way her team performed and knew the importance of getting the win.

“This was plain and simple a must win,” Armellino said. “It was senior day and we were feeding off the leadership of our seniors. I think each and every one of them played fantastically.”

Ashlie Guinness earned her first goal of the season for the Cardinals’ after burying a header in the back of the net just minutes after Saccocio’s goal. PSUC’s third goal came from freshman standout Lindsey Bushey for her tenth of the season.

The Cards’ were able to outshoot Buffalo State 15-7 and held possession for a majority of the contest. Armellino that mentality and team effort were the difference maker in the team earning a win.

“I think yesterday we were getting frustrated,” Armellino said. “It’s hard to hold the most possession and not get the goals, so you could see the frustration built.”

PSUC’s fourth and final goal came from Cassidy Clavet who soared in a free kick from 30 yards out with three minutes remaining to play. Clavet now had four goals on the season.

The Cardinals’ will finish up SUNYAC play next weekend as they take on Geneseo on Friday and Brockport on Saturday.
