Cards shut out Cortland

The Plattsburgh State hockey team kicked off the 2018-2019 regular season at home with back-to-back games against SUNY Cortland Friday and Saturday. The Cardinals had the offense going, outshooting the Red Dragons 105-24 all weekend.

Captain Courtney Moriarty collected two goals in the first game on seven shots, also gathering an assist to conclude her three-point start to the season. She scored the first goal of the game, just seconds into the second period, and closing the game off with the last goal.

Sophomore left wing Kaitlin-Drew Mead, senior center Mackenzie Millen and freshman left wing Taylor Whitney contributed goals as well, leading PSUC to a 5-0 win.

The second day was another offensive display. Moriarty netted two more goals in the 7-0 win. Freshman defenseman Hanna Rose scored her first collegiate goal, just a day after getting her first collegiate point with an assist on Whitney’s goal.

Sophomore forward Abby Brush scored twice as well.

“The first one was the end of the shift and after I saw the rebound I just chased it in. I didn’t know if it was going in so I just hit it. I was really surprised”, Brush said. “The second was a rebound, I just knew if I hit it, it was going to go in.”

The Cards received a number of rewards for their efforts last week. Rose was named NEWHL rookie of the week for her goal in the second game against Cortland. Moriarty received NEWHL player of the week for her five point weekend. Kassi Abbott received NEWHL goaltender of the week for her shutout weekend.

“She just looks confident out there”, head coach Kevin Houle said. Abbott stopped all 24 shots that came to her last weekend.
With former captain Melissa Sheeran gone, it is Moriarty’s turn with the “C” on her chest.

“She’s been excellent for us for years now”, Houle said. “She’s a great leader, a quiet leader, but leads by example.”
