Cardinals lose two, extend streak to four straight losses

A week after losses against Oswego and Cortland, the Plattsburgh State men’s ice hockey team lost another pair against Fredonia and Buffalo State.

Sophomore forward Cullen Kane said the Cardinals didn’t bring the effort that was needed, which he found frustrating.

PSU faced the Fredonia Blue Devils on the ice this past Friday night. Although a valiant effort was made, PSU lost 5-0.

“I think, Friday night, we didn’t have the work ethic we needed to win. I think Fredonia wanted it more than we did,” head coach Stephen Moffat said.

At 3:20 in the first period, Fredonia managed to score one goal, which was  made by Jasper Korican-Barlay and with the help of Anders Johnson and Craig McCabe.

The point was a rebound shot made by Korican-Barlay that was initially Johnson’s shot.

Fredonia managed to make the score 2-0 at 14:55 of the second period because of Jacob Haynes, who skated across PSU’s defense and took a wrist shot over the Cards’ goaltenders shoulder.

Haynes was not the only Blue Devil to make a shot during the second period. Hugo Gamache was able to score another point for Fredonia. Gamache’s shot was another wrist shot that managed to weave its way through defenders and get past PSU’s goaltender.

Fredonia came into its power play in the third period. Although the Cards played strong defense, Korican-Barlay and Tommy Martyn scored two more goals, leaving Fredonia with five points and the Cards with zero.

“We could’ve played our systems better, played what we know. That could’ve helped us to be better,” freshman forward Adam Tretowicz said.

With the loss of Friday’s game under their belt, the Cards still fought for a shot at victory Saturday night. Even though PSU wanted to win, its effort would be unsuccessful. The night would end with Buffalo state having six points and PSU with one.

Within the first period of the game, Charles Barber of Buffalo State managed to get a point for the Bengals. Barber was assisted by Nikita Kozyrev and Zach Remers.

With an assist from Tretowicz, senior forward and alternate captain Joe Drabin answered and gained a point for the Cards. The play was a pass from behind the Bengal’s net to Drabin, who scored with a wrist shot at 12:11 in the first period.

Cody Symonds then put Buffalo State in the lead by scoring a rebound shot at 16:10 of the first period.

The score stayed the same until the second period, when Bengal’s forward Vadim Vasjonkin scored.

During the third period, Buffalo State would score three more points, making the final score 6-1.

According to both Moffat and Kane, the team had a good week at practice and went into the games with a good mindset.

With the SUNYAC tournament still in play, Tretowicz said: “We still have a chance. We have to win three to make sure we enter.”

Knowing Potsdam has been playing well, Moffat had some encouraging words. He said PSU controls its own destiny and has to take everything game by game.
