Women’s soccer extends winning streak to three games against Union College

The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team extended its win streak to three games with a 2-0 win against the Union College Dutchwomen Tuesday night.

On the whole, head coach Tania Armellino was satisfied with her team’s effort in the shutout.

‘We’re going to keep fine-tuning, but I’m super happy we got that first home game done, got the result and were able to get the clean sheet, for sure,” Armellino said.

The Cardinals won the tight affair with goals from Sophomore midfielder Abigail Seamans early in the first half and from freshman forward/midfielder Kirsten Villemaire in the second half.

“It feels good,” Villemaire said when speaking about establishing her presence on the team early. “I wouldn’t be able to do it without my team, obviously. We all work hard, top to bottom. You just have to get lucky and work hard, I guess.”

Junior midfielder/defender Sarah Bonner assisted on Seamans’ goal, while junior midfielder Delaney Dyer assisted on Villemaire’s.

This balance of scoring is a point of happiness for Armellino on a team that is loaded with younger players, including 12 freshmen.

While she didn’t score in the game against Union, freshman forward/midfielder Allison Seidman beat opponents to several balls in the game, including a breakaway she created shortly after Villemaire’s goal.

Considering she scored two goals and notched two assists over the weekend, Armellino was confident that the goals will keep coming as the season continues.

“She’ll be able to find her way more and more, and finish more and more,” Armellino said.

The game also marked the third win of the season for PSUC’s new starting goalkeeper, graduate student Taylor Adams.

For Adams, it’s the culmination of years of hard work.

“I’ve been working with these defenders for like four years now, and now we’re finally able to play together,” Adams said. “We’re working as a unit, and it’s so great to finally have that payoff.”

Next up, the Cards will face the RPI Engineers in Troy on Saturday at 7 p.m. in another non-conference game.

Adams has seen the team before, and knows what to expect.

“They’re going to come out hard,” Adams said. “They’re very physical, they’re a very good team, they’re very put together and they usually give us a tough time each year.”

Armellino is going to waste no time in using Tuesday’s game as preparation for Saturday’s strong opponent.

“We’ll be fine-tuning those things that we’ve see we need to work on and will be working on them this week, because RPI is always organized, athletic, quick and technical.”
