Women’s hockey take home win in first home matchup

The Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team opened up on their home ice for the first time in their 2014-15 campaign since beginning conference play.

The Cards had no trouble with the visiting opponents from Chatham, as they won 6-0. Prior to the start of the game PSUC raised their championship banner in honor of their Division III NCAA Championship title season.

Cardinals’ goalie Ally Ross established herself as tough to score on and was able to earn her first shutout of the season. The Cougars fired 19 shots on Ross but couldn’t seem to put one past the senior goalkeeper. PSUC fired off an impressive 49 shots in the matchup.

In the first period, the Cards were creating plenty of opportunities to score with their 17 shots, but only one would find its way into the net. Sophomore forward Melissa Ames earned her first goal of the season, with her goal six minutes into the period. The remainder of the period would be scoreless.

Junior forward Bridgit Balisy would be the next to score for PSUC when she slipped one past the Chatham goalie on a rebounded shot. With that goal, the junior now has five points throughout the Cards’ first five contests. Freshman standout Kayla Meneghin would be the next Card to score, earning her fourth goal of the season off of a Jordan Lipson assist. Meneghin knocked in a third goal in the later period, earning her first star honors.

Senior captain Mia Favretto and Balisy would tally in PSUC’s final goals in the third period to give the Cards’ their first home win of the season. Throughout their first three conference games the team stands at 3-0. The Cardinals’ will return for action to battle it out against the Cougars tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Stafford Ice Arena.
