Team sees positives in difficult year

At the conclusion of the season, the Plattsburgh State women’s tennis team finished with a record of 3-8, 0-3 in SUNYAC. Even though the team wasn’t successful in terms of wins, the players and coaches agreed that they had a great season.

Head coach Annmarie Curle said the Cardinals had the goal of going into every match with their best effort, competing as hard as possible, and she said the team met that goal.

Curle said it became evident that the players were committed to improving, and they have shown continued commitment toward improvement.

“The chemistry that we had made the team better, and it seemed like the players were committed to each other,” Curle said.

Assistant coach Joe Higgins said the season was great because the coaches learned how good their team can be. He sees great potential with the team.

Higgins added that one of the offseason focuses for the team is to make the returning players better by establishing and maintaining workout routines and emphasizing good habits.

“We might not have a player workout one day if they’ve had a knee injury during the season,” Higgins said. “We might send them to the trainer and have them ice it instead.”

Curle said she is also focusing on recruiting to possibly bring in a couple of players who can help the team right away.

Freshman Shari Forman, who was tied for the team lead with five wins, said one of the toughest things for her was coming close to winning a match and then losing it.

Curle added that one of the things the team will look to improve next season is consistency because the Cards make great plays, but they want to make the flashes of greatness into something more constant.

She said the team will focus on court movement and experience next season because developing mental toughness will be key to the team’s future success.

Senior Emily Carlin said the team should focus on footwork and some of the players should do extra training outside of practice because putting in the extra effort makes a difference.

Curle said she is disappointed that the season is over, but she is confident the team has a bright future.
