Students encouraged to get involved on campus

Belinda Robertson, the Plattsburgh State Student Association Management Associate, said the Student Association has 106 clubs, which does not include recreational sports, academic clubs, and honor societies.

She explained some actions you can take in getting involved, including becoming a senator in the executive council, or participating in the council for which you can have sub committees for issues you’re passionate about. The Student Association always holds trips and student services for students, and have extensive information about being involved on campus.

“Not only to be a member of a club, but to gain friendships and support from others.”  Robertson said.

Students can go visit Robertson in the Student Association Office in the Angell College Center with questions about getting involved on campus for your next four years at Plattsburgh State.

PSUC sophomore math major Justin Yeaple is immersed in the clubs he’s involved with. As an active member of the marksmanship club he is the second vice president, treasurer and one of the top shooters. He made many of his friends through the marksmanship club from going every week, competing regularly, and traveling to different schools with the other members of the club.

Students can also make up their own clubs and organizations on campus. Yeaple is also a member of the Dungeons and Dragons club, which is a new club of this semester.

Clinton Commons Community Government and Res Life are clubs that can help students who want to have a political role on campus. Sophomore environmental studies major Charles Olsen is the community advocate (CA)  of the seventh floor of Wilson Hall. During his freshman year, he was the public relations representative for the Clinton Commons Community Government as well.

As a CA, he develops safety and security of Wilson. Another part of his job is giving residents advice about making friends and feeling comfortable in college.

“For freshman, making friends starts with your floor and always leaving your door open and not being afraid to get out of your comfort zone,” Wilson said. “Always saying hello to people and starting a conversation with strangers can help you make friends.”

The Student Involvement Fair will be held in the Warren Ballrooms on the second floor of the Angell College Center on Friday, Sept. 7, 2018.
