Seniors Leave Game on Winning Note

With the Cardinals out of the SUNYAC race, they had one more task to finish before ending the season: to get a win for their seniors.

The Cards finished their last game of the season with a bang as they defeated Utica College 5-1 at home.

“We made a commitment that even though out season is over we would going to give out best effort for our four seniors,” Waterbury said.

And they did with 29 shots by Plattsburgh State, 13 of them shot on goal compared to Uticas five.

Within the two minutes of the game, middle fielder Ian Spear scored his third goal of the year with an assists from Alexis Archilla.

By the 21st minute, Nicholas Laurent scored his fourth goal of the season finishing the game and his freshman year with the most goals among all first year Cardinal players this season.

With that in mind, Waterbury said that once they lost their playoff spot their player’s season started this past Monday.

“It’s easy to see what people made of when things are going great, but let’s see what you are made of when the chips are down.”

By the end of the first period, the Cards had scored four goals within 16 shots taken with Chris Bowden scoring two of them.

Once the second period started, the Cards scored one more goal under freshman Matt Henning at the 77th mark, his first of his career.

When the game was over, Waterbury knew his season was a disappointment.

“Truthfully, horribly,” Waterbury said. “It wasn’t what we wanted, it wasn’t what we expected. I’m a big believer in good teams create their breaks. We had every possible thing go wrong.”

Wednesday night was also the final game for seniors Matt Bonomini, Sean Murphy , Nick Parrella, Wade Goehle and Nate Economou. Together, they compiled a 54-24 record with five ties leading the team to back-to-back SUNYAC finals in 2012 and 2013, winning it all last year.
