PSUC named top college for 7th straight year

For the seventh consecutive year, Plattsburgh State has been ranked among “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report.

PSUC was ranked No. 74 in the comprehensive list of northern regional universities where it tied with Endicott College, Iona College, Norwich University and Keene State University.

The college moves up several spots from its ranking at No. 81 last year.

“Again this year, we are proud to see so many of our SUNY campuses like Plattsburgh recognized as being among the best nationally by U.S. News & World Report,” SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher said.

According to the U.S. News & World Report website, “The U.S. News ranking system rests on two pillars. The formula uses quantitative measures that education experts have proposed as reliable indicators of academic quality, and it’s based on our researched view of what matters in education.”

Each college is separated into different regional categories, including national universities, national liberal arts colleges, regional universities and regional colleges.

Within those categories are separate subcategories — for example, regional colleges and regional universities are separated into geographical areas: North, South, Midwest and West.

After each college is placed into its regional category, it is then evaluated and judged on 16 indicators of academic success, including undergraduate academic reputation, retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity and financial resources.

Of the nearly 1,800 colleges that the Report evaluated, 91.5 percent of those provided the data that was used to determine the rankings.

“We’re pleased that our long-term focus on academic excellence and keeping students at the center of all we do is paying off,” PSUC President John Ettling said. “That focus is helping us move up, and we hope to continue the trend.”
