Political activities tonight, tomorrow

Measures of support for two presidential candidates to try to win the hearts of eager voters will take place in Plattsburgh this weekend.

Vying for votes, Republican presidential candidate and businessman Donald Trump will travel to Plattsburgh for a rally set for 3 p.m. today at the Crete Center, according to a WPTZ report.

The following day, a march will take place to support Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. However, Sanders will not be present for the march. Plattsburgh residents and co-organizers Patricia Blanchard, Wendy Bridges and Adam Guillette had organized another march for Sanders Saturday, Feb. 27.

However, in light of the upcoming New York primary, they decided to hold another.

The march will start at 2 p.m. from Trinity Park to the Plattsburgh State campus. From there, participants will walk a loop around the campus, heading back to Trinity Park.

Jurek said she thinks that, because of the attention Trump will bring to his Plattsburgh arrival, national news media will follow him to his rally.

“It’s great for Plattsburgh that Trump is coming,” Jurek said. “We’re the largest city north of Albany.”

Former PSUC Student Association Vice President of Finance and senior Jessica Rappaport said she definitely doesn’t like Trump.

“I don’t like the way he talks to women,” Rappaport said. “I think he just likes attention.”

PSUC junior human development and family relations major Krista Honey said she doesn’t avidly follow a particular candidate.

She also said she dislikes Trump’s approach and that it is unfair to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

“There’s always going to be problems,” she said of all the world’s nations.

Honey also said although she appreciates Sanders’ appeal to the middle class, she is unsure whether he can constitutionally fund his plan for tuition-free public colleges and universities by a tax on Wall Street speculation.

Both the march and the rally are sure to draw sizable crowds. Both Trump and Sanders will be able to see the outcome of their efforts throughout the state when voting ends April 19.
