Cardinal Watch: Jabaut chases future close to home

Steffaney Jabaut, a Plattsburgh native and third-year senior at SUNY Plattsburgh, has lived in the Plattsburgh area her entire life and has grown to appreciate it because of how close she can be to her family, something that is very important to her after having a hard childhood.

“The only thing you know you have at this moment is family,” Jabaut said.

Jabaut spent her childhood in Peru, and attended middle and high school in Chazy just 20 minutes north of Plattsburgh.

“When it came around for college I had just moved back in with my mom, so it just seemed perfect,” Jabaut said.

Jabaut started at Plattsburgh State in Fall 2017 and was declared as undecided.

“I wanted to be anything from an engineer to a music teacher,” said Jabaut. Fast forward to today, Jabaut is a dual major in international business and business administration and minors in global supply chain management and plans to graduate in Spring 2020.

Not only is she heavily involved in academic life, she’s also involved in a number of clubs and organizations on campus. She is the senator for public relations on the Student Association and she is also on the public relations board for the Activities Coordination Board on campus. Jabaut is also in the geology club, French club and is a student rep for the current Presidential Search Committee on campus. She is also a part of the student life committee.

“There’s probably more but I don’t remember,” Jabaut said followed by a hearty laugh.

Jabaut is currently interning as a grant reporting specialist at Rural Preservation Company of Clinton County in Saranac. It is a nonprofit company that helps low-income individuals, veterans and the elderly pay for repairs on their home if they aren’t able to pay for them.

Outside of school, Jabaut works a lot but has always been very involved with music. She originally wanted to be a music teacher, but decided that she didn’t want her identity to be all about music. Jabaut is a multi-instrumentalist. Her main instrument is the trumpet, but she also plays guitar, piano, french horn, clarinet, percussion and to top it all off she’s also a singer.

To say that Jabaut is a busy and involved student would be a gross understatement. From her freshman year to where she is now, she has exploded onto the campus scene and keeps herself as busy as she can.
