Cards win 3-0, honor senior players

The Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team notched another win this season with senior forward Sarah Wolf scoring two goals to help the Cardinals win with a comfortable scoreline of 3-0 over No. 4 Elmira College on senior night.

The Cards are currently ranked 22-1 this season and have extended its winning streak to 14 games.

Wolf scored a career high two goals in the first period on that night and marked the end of her run for PSU.

Her first goal was assisted by sophomore forward Hannah Rose, which Wolf doubled in less than five minutes, that time assisted by junior defenseman Emma Killeen and freshman defenseman Kendall Wasik.

Sophomore forward Taylor Whitney put the game to bed halfway into the third period by making it 3-0 for theCards. Whitney was assisted by sophomore forward Nicole Unsworth.

Another stellar performance from sophomore goaltender Ashley Davis saw her make 17 saves as she recorded her fifth shutout of the season. Davis was also selected as the NEWHL Goalie of the Week for the fourth time.

PSU is  set to wrap up its Northeast Women’s Hockey League regular season with a two-game series against Morrisville State on Friday and Saturday before heading into the play-offs.

Before the puck was dropped, the Cards honored its senior players: Wolf, defensemen Hannah Kiraly and Jen Manning.

Head coach Kevin Houle does not believe the season is over, with play-offs yet to come, but he did commend the three seniors on his team.

“They are all contributing players in different ways. Obviously, Kiraly is a two-time All-American, one of our best defensemen from day one,” Houle said.

Houle said Wolf is a hard working role player, who plays her role well, and he said it is always nice to have that type of a player. Wolf contributed to the game by scoring twice this week.

“Despite her time on the ice being limited, Jen is a great kid and a great teammate,” Houle added.

For the three seniors, it was a wonderful experience playing for the Cards. Kiraly and Manning both believe nothing could top winning the national championship.

“Our freshman year was probably the most memorable, winning it in overtime. We went through a lot that year and to be able to come out on top and in the fashion we did was huge,” Manning said.

Wolf believes it’s a system that helps them be the best they can here at PSU when asked about their legacy.

“The seniors in the past really showed us what we have to do to be a championship team. I think the freshmen have really stepped up this year. I think our juniors and sophomores have been stepping up. I think everyone knows what they need to do.” Wolf said.

Kiraly and Manning believe the legacy they leave behind is of respect and being the best version of a teammate you can be. They have created an atmosphere where people can come in and be ready to win it.

“Thanks to everyone that supported us throughout the last four years, you know, playing in Plattsburgh has been a really special thing a lot of Division III schools don’t get the support that we have so it’s been really special place to play a lot of special people come through there so we’re really grateful for everything that we’ve been able to do. It’s also the guys upstairs in the equipment room, our bus driver – all of them make a difference” Kiraly and Manning said.
