Cards fall in hard-fought match

The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team dropped its third consecutive conference game to a tough Fredonia team on Friday afternoon. The lone goal of the afternoon came just over a minute into the first half by Fredonia’s Alexis Moreland, her fourth of the season.

PSUC (6-6-1, 2-3-1 SUNYAC) managed to outshoot the Blue Devils (6-6-1, 3-2-1 SUNYAC) 11-6. Cardinal’s head coach Tania Armellino said that her team was creating chances and doing everything right, but just couldn’t find the back of the net which was a heartbreaker.

“Not being able to finish, outshooting the team and hitting two crossbars. To me that is even worse than the goal you give up,” Armellino said. “Because you can’t win if you don’t score.”

The Cards’ had their fair share of chances in the second half and controlled possession and once again out shot Fredonia in the half 8-4. Cammey Keyser and Lindsey Bushey led PSUC in shots, each with five a piece.

Aremillino said that she did see a lot of positives out of her team despite the loss.

“I think we were switching fields pretty well, we kept the majority of the possession and were creating the opportunities but we just can’t get the finish and that’s the killer,” Armellino said.

The Cards have struggled to find the back of the net in recent games and have only scored one goal in their last three contests. The team still ranks third in goals scored in the SUNYAC conference despite their recent offensive woes.

Action continues Saturday for the Cardinals’ as they take on Buffalo State (6-6-2, 3-3-0 SUNYAC) on their home turf at 1 p.m. With only three SUNYAC games remaining the team currently sits in eighth place and must win against the Bengals if they want to get a playoff spot.
