Recent arrest raises concerns

The Plattsburgh State Housing and Residence Life office has increased security in dorm buildings across campus following the arrest of PSUC graduate Woon Kheng Tan Sept. 5.

According to the University Police report, Tan is believed to have gained access after being let into the building behind a resident student.

Director of Housing and Residence Life Steve Matthews said students are discouraged from letting in people that may not live in their building.

“If someone’s banging on the door to be let in, well, that’s why we have the call box out by the front doors,” Matthews said. “They can press the button and call University Police, who can verify that they are a student and grant them access.”

Matthews said after the two female Whiteface Hall residents reported that their rooms were broken in to, every door combination in Whiteface was immediately changed.

In addition, the door combinations to every residential director’s office across campus was changed. The lists of room combinations for each room in their respective buildings were also taken out of these offices. Copies of these lists are now under lock and key in only the Housing Office and University Police station.

Any time a residential employee leaves staff, all building office codes will also be changed to ensure future instances of this type will not occur again, Matthews said.

“Even though everything was secure to begin with, we weren’t expecting someone to break the law. Now we’re more prepared,” Matthews said.
